DIDO AND AENEAS

Dido and Aeneas’ story as told by Henry Purcell

Dido and Aeneas’ story, with its eternal themes of love and forsakenness, has been retold on countless occasions in painting, literature and music. In HENRY PURCELL’s masque, the myth narrated by Vergil in the Fourth Book of the Aeneid is tempered and almost transformed into a fairy-tale, with witches, magical apparitions and a dreamlike atmosphere all concur into creating an exquisite chamber opera, in the festive Baroque rhetoric of amazement and enchantment. The shadow play by Controluce tells Dido and Aeneas’ story with silhouette- and man-made shadows. Shadows are impalpable; they disappear and are as ephemeral as music. By juxtaposing it with operatic theatre, shadow-play becomes an instrument for proposing opera to those who aren’t familiar with it.
