Gabriel Fauré, Requiem op. 48 and sacred works

GABRIEL FAURÉ owes much of his fame to his Requiem. Though it is generally performed in the version with symphonic orchestra, we propose it in its original form, with a small instrumental ensemble. The Requiem was performed in this scoring on Jan. 16th, 1888, in the Parisian Church of the Madeleine, where Fauré was Choir Director. The Requiem is framed by some other sacred works by Fauré; in turn, they are suffused with a refined lyricism and with the harmonic sophistication which mark the style of this composer, who can rightfully be numbered among the leading artists in the French fin-de-siècle music.
